A privacy filter must fit the display it is designed to cover. The laptop's advertised diagonal alone is not enough: screens with the same diagonal can have different proportions, and the frame around them changes how a filter attaches. Identify the full laptop model and compare it with the filter maker's fit guide.

3M's measuring guidance distinguishes a raised bezel from flat edge-to-edge glass. The measurement reference differs between those screen types. Follow the instructions for the filter you are considering rather than applying one generic width-and-height method to every laptop.

Check the attachment and lid clearance

Look at how the filter stays in place: tabs, adhesive strips, magnets or another model-specific method. Confirm that it does not cover the camera, sensors or the active display area unexpectedly. If the laptop folds into a tablet or supports touch, check those uses explicitly in the compatibility information.

Find out whether the filter should be removed before closing the lid. Do not assume a magnetic attachment or a thin appearance means it can safely remain in every laptop. Store a removable filter flat in its supplied sleeve or another suitable protective holder instead of sliding it loose between papers that may bend it.

Test the view from the seat beside you

Privacy is directional and dependent on the product, viewing angle and environment. Read which directions the filter is intended to restrict, then test with ordinary sample text from the side positions that matter. Someone directly behind you may still have a similar view to yours. A filter is not a substitute for choosing where to display sensitive material.

Inspect your own view at the brightness and screen angle you normally use. Check text, a spreadsheet and any colour-sensitive work you perform. If you must reposition the lid constantly to read comfortably, the product may not suit your setup even if its outline fits.

Keep the packaging until fit and operation are confirmed. Record the exact filter model so a replacement is easier to find later. The useful purchase is one that matches the physical display and the particular side-view problem you face, while leaving your ordinary work readable.
