A desk mat can give a keyboard and mouse a shared surface, but its outline should follow the work you do. Put the equipment in its usual positions, move the mouse through a typical task and mark the area you need. Include a notebook only if it normally stays there; making a mat large enough for every possible object can leave it trapped under equipment you rarely move.
Check the depth between the front edge of the desk and the monitor base. A mat that partly rests on a stand foot may not lie flat. Rounded corners and stitched edges also occupy space, so compare outside measurements rather than a photograph showing the product on an unusually large desk.
Think about the next spill
Read the cleaning instructions for the actual material. A surface described as leather, synthetic leather, felt or fabric can require a different approach, and a water-resistant claim does not necessarily make it washable. Decide whether you are willing to move everything off the mat and allow it to dry when cleaning is necessary.
Consider what you place on it. A mug, pen and camera support create different demands from a keyboard alone. If you regularly eat at the same table, a smaller removable mouse pad may be easier to maintain than a large mat. Avoid choosing a light colour solely from product photography if visible marks will bother you in daily use.
Test the surface, not just the outline
Mouse movement can feel different on cloth, textured and smooth surfaces. If precise work matters, try a sample or buy under a return policy that allows an ordinary assessment. Check that the underside stays put on your desk and that the edges do not curl into the area where your wrist or mouse moves.
A thicker mat may soften the feel of placing objects down, but it also creates a step at the front edge. A very thin one may be easier to roll while offering less separation from the desk. Neither is automatically better; look at how the mat sits with your keyboard and usual hand position.
For a shared table, plan storage before buying. A mat that can be rolled should be stored as the manufacturer recommends, without tight folds or heavy objects pressing on it. The right size is the one you can use, clean and put away without repeatedly rearranging the rest of the room.
